Whether you've been camping for years or are about to set off on your very first camping holiday, it's always nice to know a little about your destination beforehand. Perhaps you're looking forward to relaxing on your pitch, exploring the surroundings on foot or by bike, or discovering some of the local attractions.
To help you feel at home from the moment you arrive, we've gathered the most important information about Camping Houtum. From our different camping pitches and facilities to practical arrival tips and things to do nearby.
In this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about camping at Camping Houtum for the first time.
Welcome to Our Campsite in the Heart of the Campine Region
If you haven't visited us before, we'd love to introduce ourselves. Camping Houtum was established in 1975 and has been connected to the Van Eyck family for more than 50 years.
Our campsite has around 100 privately owned static caravans, approximately 60 touring pitches and 13
rental accommodation units. This means we welcome all kinds of guests: regular campers, visitors staying for a weekend, families exploring the Campine region and guests who prefer the comfort of rental accommodation.
Today Vic manages the day-to-day running, of the campsite, together with a team you'll meet at reception, in Café de Congé and around the grounds.
At Camping Houtum, it's all about camping itself, peace and quiet, outdoor living and the beautiful nature surrounding Kasterlee. You can enjoy a friendly chat with fellow campers or simply relax in the peace and quiet of your own pitch. How you spend your holiday is entirely up to you.
There's plenty to discover in the surrounding area too. From the campsite, it's just a short walk to the Kleine Nete river, and the centre of Kasterlee is also nearby. You'll find various shops, restaurants and cafés there. October is a particularly special time to visit, when Kasterlee celebrates its famous pumpkin traditions.
Our Touring Pitches
Are you bringing your own tent, folding camper, caravan or motorhome? At Camping Houtum, you can choose from several types of touring pitches.
Some guests enjoy the friendly atmosphere of an open camping field, while others prefer a little more space, their own water connection or a hardstanding pitch. That's why we offer different camping areas and pitch types, so you can choose the one that best suits your camping equipment and preferences.
Standard Pitches
Our standard pitches are approximately 100 m² and are located together on an open camping field. You'll have access to a shared 10-amp electricity supply, with connection points that may be a little further away from your pitch. Several water points are available around the field. You can park your car directly on your pitch.
Comfort Pitches
Our comfort pitches are approximately 125 m² and are separated by hedges and greenery for a little extra privacy. Each pitch has a 10-amp electricity connection, as well as its own fresh water supply and wastewater drainage. Thanks to the artificial grass, you can step outside without getting muddy after a rainy day. Cars are parked in the central car park.
Motorhome Pitches
Our six motorhome pitches are specially designed for motorhomes. Each pitch has a hardstanding area measuring 3 by 8 metres, made from grass paving blocks, alongside an equally sized grass area. You'll have access to a 10-amp electricity connection and your own water supply. The motorhome pitches are also available during the winter months when the campsite is open.

Nete Area
Our Nete camping area offers pitches of approximately 100 m² in a peaceful, shaded location close to Domein de putten. Electricity connections are available at distances of up to approximately 25 metres, but there is no water point on the field itself. The sanitary facilities are a little further away.
Tent Field
Our tent field is a small, car-free camping area with space for up to ten tents. You'll be camping close to the sanitary facilities and can use the picnic benches provided on the field. There are no electricity or water connections directly on the tent field. A maximum of four people can stay in each tent.
Not sure which pitch would suit your camping equipment best? Feel free to contact our reception team. We'll be happy to help you choose a suitable pitch. View our camping pitches >>
What Should You Bring on Your Camping Holiday?
Whether you're going camping for the first time or have already visited plenty of campsites, there are always a few things worth checking before you leave. Especially if this is your first visit to Camping Houtum, it's useful to know which connections and facilities are available on your pitch.

Camping Essentials
A few things you definitely shouldn't forget when camping with us:
A water hose, suitable tent pegs and a torch can also come in handy. Exactly what you'll need depends on your camping equipment and the type of pitch you've booked.
Have you booked a comfort pitch or motorhome pitch? Then you can use the water connection directly on your pitch. Facilities on our standard pitches and the Nete camping area are slightly different, as explained above.
And don't worry if you're not familiar with everything just yet. Especially when trying out a new caravan or motorhome for the first time, it can take a little while to figure things out. You're always welcome to ask us for help.
Aankomen en inchecken bij Camping Houtum
When you arrive at a campsite for the first time, it's nice to know where to go and how everything works. If you've booked a touring pitch, you're welcome to check in from 1:00 pm. On your departure day, you can stay on your pitch until 12:00 noon.
When you arrive, please report to our reception first. We'll take care of the necessary administration, give you the cards you'll need and explain where your camping pitch is located. Our campsite map also shows you where to find the sanitary buildings, Café de Congé and other facilities. To enter the campsite by car, you'll need your barrier access card. The barrier operates daily between 7:00 am and 11:00 pm.
Arriving after reception has closed? Please let us know in advance. We'll make sure the necessary information and access cards are ready for you, so you can still reach your pitch. You can then visit reception the following morning to complete your check-in. That way, even a late arrival can be a relaxed start to your stay.
Reception Opening Hours
Our reception is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, and on Fridays until 7:30 pm. You can visit us not only to check in, but also with practical questions about your pitch, our facilities or your stay. Need a little help or not quite sure how something works? Just pop in and ask. We're always happy to help.
Discover the Campine Region
Our reception is also a great place to find inspiration for your stay in Kasterlee and the surrounding Campine region. We have various walking and cycling routes available for you. Some routes start close to the campsite, allowing you to head straight out and explore on foot or by bike. Our campsite map also shows the nearest walking and cycling junctions, making it easy to plan your own route.
If you'd like to explore a little further afield, you'll find plenty of information at reception too. We have brochures about activities in Kasterlee and the surrounding area, as well as towns, attractions and other interesting places to visit throughout Flanders.

Not sure what you'd like to do during your stay? Just ask! We'll gladly help you find an outing that suits you and your travel companions.
Our Sanitary Facilities
During your stay, you can use our two sanitary buildings, both equipped with underfloor heating. This is especially pleasant on chilly mornings or when camping during the winter months. You'll find spacious toilets, showers, a family shower, a baby bath and accessible facilities for guests with reduced mobility. There are also indoor and outdoor dishwashing areas.
We've thought of the little practical details too. Toilet paper is provided in all toilets, so there's no need to walk across the campsite carrying a toilet roll under your arm. Of course, if that's part of the traditional camping experience for you, we won't stop you!
We also try to make things as easy as possible for families with children. The family shower and baby bath provide extra space, allowing you to get everyone ready comfortably. And thanks to the heated sanitary facilities, even a chilly morning or rainy day feels a little more pleasant.
For the showers and hot dishwashing water, you'll need an SEP card, which you'll receive at reception when you arrive. There is a €10 deposit for the card, and it comes with €10 of starting credit. Hot water is charged according to your usage, at €0.05 per 10 seconds. You can top up your card during your stay whenever necessary.
Clean and comfortable sanitary facilities are very important to us. Our dedicated cleaning team works hard every day to keep everything in excellent condition. We're proud to have received the ACSI Award for Best Sanitary Facilities in both 2024 and 2025.
Café de Congé
After a walk, a bike ride or simply a relaxing day at the campsite, it's lovely to sit down and enjoy a drink. That's exactly what Café de Congé, our café at the front of the campsite, is for. You can catch up with fellow campers, enjoy a drink on the sunny terrace or cool down inside with the air conditioning.
Café de Congé is also known as a cycling café, and for good reason. The Campine region is particularly popular with cyclists, and several beautiful cycling routes can be explored directly from our campsite. Walkers and visitors who aren't staying at Camping Houtum are also very welcome.
Inside Café de Congé you'll find various traditional café games and board games. There's darts, table football, card games, board games and a pool table. We also have a book exchange, where you can take a book to read and perhaps leave another one for a fellow guest.
During the summer season, Café de Congé is open every day. Outside the summer months, opening hours vary, and at certain times the café is only open at weekends.
Petanque en beachvolleybal
Fancy playing a game during your stay? Behind Café de Congé, you'll find our pétanque court and beach volleyball court. Both are free for campsite guests to use. If you haven't brought your own pétanque balls, you can simply borrow a set from us.
Prefer something a little more active? You can enjoy a game of beach volleyball with your family, friends or fellow campers. Volleyballs are also available to borrow. It's a great way to spend a fun afternoon without even leaving the campsite.
Domein de putten
At the back of the campsite, you'll find our neighbours at Domein de putten. The great thing is that you can simply walk there from your camping pitch. There's no need to get in the car when you fancy something to eat, the children want to play or you'd like to enjoy an activity together.
For children, there's ’t Tofste Speelhuis, with a large indoor and outdoor playground. This makes it a great place to visit in both sunny and rainy weather. There's also a goat enclosure for younger children, and special goat feed can be purchased inside.
Meanwhile, you can enjoy something to eat or drink at Moe Marie. The name Moe Marie actually has a special connection to Camping Houtum. Moe Marie was Jakke and Vic's grandmother, and in the early years of the campsite, our very first reception was literally at her kitchen table.
Looking for something active to do together?
Domein de putten also offers activities such as farm golf. With so many possibilities right next to the campsite, it's an easy place to spend a few enjoyable hours with family or friends.
Our Rental Accommodation
In addition to camping with your own equipment, you can also choose from 13 rental accommodation units. The main differences between them are their size, facilities and the number of guests they can accommodate.
We offer accommodation for 2, 4 or 6 people, with a choice of cabins, tiny houses, chalets, safaritenten en tipitenten. Some have their own shower and toilet, while others use the campsite's sanitary facilities.
Below is an overview of our different accommodation types, making it easier to see which one best suits your group.
