As family owners, we like to make time for our guests. We do everything necessary to provide you with an unforgettable holiday and to provide you with the best possible information about the region.

Today Camping Houtum is run by the two brothers Jakke and Vic Van Eyck. Surrounded by family and loyal employees, they are ready day in, day out to make their guests feel at home. But Houtum's story started much earlier than that ...

A piece of history

In 1975, in the Van Eyck-De Ceuster family, had the fabulous idea to set up a campsite in Kasterlee, where nature, agriculture and tourism live in harmony. Kasterlee soon rediscovers itself as a tourist attraction in Flanders. The campsite was named “Houtum” and, in 1975, had 76 plots for static places. The rewarding location in the middle of the Kastelse nature contributed to an increasing success and the camping site soon expanded.

1980

The canteen of yesteryear was a popular location for all kinds of association and family gatherings, which meant that the demand for organizing and catering for parties was growing, the former canteen was renamed Den Eyck. Today Den Eyck is not only a party hall but also a seminar center and Sunday restaurant.

1985

A new saturation point, both for the campsite and the party hall. The buildings will be expanded so that recreation and parties can continue to coexist in harmony.

1990

The differences in need for recreation and festive occasions ripen the idea of setting up a new location for the growing recreation. The official opening of Domein De Putten will be celebrated this year. Domein de Putten still houses an outdoor and indoor playground, a small farm and a cozy tavern, all assets for the tourist, as a day visitor or resident on the Houtum site.

A new future is in sight...

2001

Bad news: the touring spots on the banks of the Kleine Nete have to move due to bad zoning. Houtum immediately takes action to work on a plan to move the touring pitches in a northerly direction. It soon became clear that a new entrance, reception, sanitary building and associated catering facilities also had to be built.

2011

The permits have finally been obtained and construction work on the new site is started. The next generation will join the company to keep the project running smoothly.

2015

Most of the work has been completed and tourism is booming again in Houtum. In addition to the new touring field, there will also be new rental accommodations. The future for Houtum is once again reassured!

2020

Corona shakes everyone and everyone thoroughly, but camping soon turns out to be the ideal activity. Hardened camper pitches have been constructed so that camping remains possible in winter. A whole year of fun guaranteed!

Where children are king

Your children or grandchildren will feel like a king at Camping Houtum. In our spacious indoor and outdoor playground, they can play to their heart's content while you watch them from the cozy brasserie terrace.

Or how about a day of adventure in the nearby Bobbejaanland? Do threatening thunderclouds or thick raindrops obstruct your plan? No problem, our indoor playground 't Tofste Speelhuis offers everything for indoor and carefree family entertainment.

Our motto is and always will be: Camping Houtum, a stay to remember...

Camping Houtum

Sustainable and responsible business

Camping Houtum does its best to help take care of the immediate environment, its people, the climate and the planet as a whole. We did this when we designed our new building by consciously choosing to equip all areas with heat pumps and no longer using any fossil fuels for the climatizing of our central building, including the hot shower water. In addition, we also provided 100,000 liters of rainwater collection and all our toilets are connected to this.

In the construction of our site, we also opt for local hedge and tree species, preferably flowering ones, so that flying insects can also benefit.

We trie as much as possible to make our customers aware of waste flows and to encourage sorting. We also sponsor local associations and sports clubs because we believe it is important to have a vibrant and resilient community around us.

But our showpiece is the collaboration with the 'Pompoenerie', a work experience center for people with disabilities. Their home base is on our domain and we try to coordinate activities as much as possible. For example, they compost all the biological waste from our entire domain and reuse it locally on the pumpkin field. It is a wonderful organization with wonderful people and we are very proud that they are part of our story

Green Key

Thanks to our efforts, we were able to achieve the Green Key Label in 2021. The Green Key is an international sustainability label for accommodation, event locations, attractions and restaurants. Every year, Tourism Flanders and GoodPlanet Belgium award the Green Key or 'Groene Sleutel'.
We are therefore very proud to be part of this group of sustainable accommodation.
