Winterkamperen in de Antwerpse Kempen: Ontdek de Rust en Natuur

Winter camping isn't for everyone. Yet at Camping Houtum, we welcome some of the most dedicated campers, even when the winter weather is a little unpredictable. Freezing temperatures, rain or even snow showers – they take it all in their stride. And at the same time, they thoroughly enjoy the wonderful peace and quiet of winter and the stillness of nature. And really, who can blame them?

With the right preparation, warm clothing and suitable camping equipment, winter camping can be one of the most relaxing adventures you can experience. At Camping Houtum we're here to help you enjoy a comfortable winter stay. Whether you're travelling with your own caravan or choosing one of our

well-insulated rental accommodations, you're very welcome!

In this article, we'll share tips on what to expect at Camping Houtum and which activities you can enjoy during your stay. It's a useful guide for both first-time winter campers and guests visiting our campsite for the first time. Enjoy reading!

Hardstanding Camping Pitches

During the winter months, we only offer

hardstanding camping pitches. This is ideal because you can step onto a relatively dry surface, even when the weather isn't at its best. These pitches are suitable for both motorhomes and caravans.

We have a total of eleven hardstanding pitches available during winter. In addition to our six hardstanding motorhome pitches, we also offer other hardstanding pitches. And of course, every pitch has an electricity connection, so you'll have what you need for a comfortable stay.

Would you like to be sure of a pitch? We recommend booking in advance, as our hardstanding pitches are limited and can fill up quickly.

Definitely worth it – a few days away in winter, with the lovely village centre within walking distance.

This was our first stay at this campsite during the winter months. We stayed on one of the hardstanding pitches with dolomite gravel, fully equipped with electricity. Ideal when the comfort pitches are too wet. We used the winter sanitary facilities, which were all very clean and lovely and warm. The staff were extremely helpful whenever we had any questions.

Heated Sanitary Facilities – Comfort in Winter

A cold shower after a winter's day? Not at Camping Houtum! Our sanitary building is fully heated, with underfloor heating extending into the shower areas. You can also wash up indoors, so there's no need to stand outside with freezing hands.

In 2024 and 2025, we even received the ACSI Award for Best Campsite Sanitary Facilities, something we're still very proud of.

Our sanitary building offers everything you need to make your winter camping experience comfortable:

🚽 Spacious toilet facilities

🧻 Toilet paper, paper towels and soap provided

🚿 Comfortable showers with underfloor heating

👶 A dedicated baby area, including a baby bath

🧽 Indoor washing-up facilities

🧺 A washing machine and tumble dryer

🚰 Easy access to drinking water

💚 Underfloor heating throughout the sanitary facilities

With these facilities, we want to make sure you can enjoy your winter stay at Camping Houtum without worrying too much about the cold. Camping Houtum has two sanitary buildings, but during the winter months, only the smaller sanitary building behind the main building is open.

Enjoy the Peace and Quiet

One of the greatest advantages of winter camping is the peace and quiet. The busy summer season has passed, leaving behind a wonderfully calm atmosphere.

Many of our winter guests enjoy sitting outside in the sunshine, wrapped up in warm clothing, simply enjoying the fresh air and peaceful surroundings.

As our campers often say: whether it's raining at home or at the campsite, the weather is the same. But when you're staying in your motorhome, you're often much more likely to head outside and explore nature than when you're sitting on the sofa at home.

Winter Camping in the Snow?

When you think of winter camping, snow is probably one of the first things that comes to mind. With a little luck, we might enjoy some snowfall again this winter.

Snow has been quite rare in recent years, but every now and then, a beautiful white layer has covered the campsite. It immediately creates a completely different atmosphere, almost as if you're on a proper winter holiday, but without having to travel far from home.

Take a lovely walk through the snowy landscape or, just like one of our camping guests, enjoy a good book in the sunshine while surrounded by a blanket of snow. Doesn't that sound wonderful?

Beautiful Walking and Cycling Routes

In winter, the landscape around Kasterlee takes on a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Our walking and cycling routes are certainly worth exploring during this season. Wrap up warmly, put on your walking boots and don't forget your thick socks. At reception, you'll find several routes to choose from, and you can also explore them in advance through RouteYou or Komoot. That way, you'll be well prepared, even if it snows!

Would you like to get some fresh air and enjoy a change of scenery? A walk along the Kleine Nete river is highly recommended. You can walk along both sides of the river and cross two bridges to create a lovely circular route. It's the perfect way to enjoy nature without having to travel far from the campsite. Would you like to know more about this beautiful walk?

Read our separate blog article about the Kleine Nete for more tips and information >>

Some of our favourite walking routes throughout the year include Kabouterbos, the Sleeping Giant, the Trekjan Trail, the Calievallei, Hoge Mouw, Prinsenpark, the Mill Route and the Kempen countryside

Hot Chocolate or a Bowl of Soup After a Winter Walk

After a long walk or cycle ride in the cold, there's nothing better than returning to the campsite and enjoying a lovely hot chocolate or a delicious bowl of soup. Wrap yourself in a fleece blanket and you'll soon feel warm and cosy again.

Speaking of winter walks, did you know that organised winter walks also take place in the area? These are held every Sunday from November through to March, starting and finishing at a local café or restaurant.

A few extra tips to make your winter camping stay even cosier:

🧣 Be prepared: Fill a flask with a hot dri before heading out, so you can warm up as soon as you return.

🍪 Winter treats: Bring along some warm waffles or speculoos biscuits to make your winter camping experience even more enjoyable.

🔥 Enjoy the outdoors: If it isn't too cold, take your hot drink outside and enjoy the surrounding nature.

Definitely worth doing again!

We went winter camping at Camping Houtum last weekend, and it was fantastic! It was so nice to have a dry, clean pitch in this weather. We received a very warm welcome, and our request to arrive a little earlier and leave a little later was happily accommodated. The sanitary facilities were absolutely spotless. I'll definitely be back!

Relax Indoors

Winter camping isn't just about spending time outdoors. It's also the perfect opportunity to enjoy life's simple pleasures indoors. Think of playing a board game, enjoying a game of pétanque outside in the sunshine, watching a Christmas film or reading an exciting book under a cosy fleece blanket.

On Holiday with the Children?

Let them have a wonderful time at our neighbours,

Domein de Putten. Just behind the campsite, you'll find 't Tofste Speelhuis and the family restaurant Moe Marie. While the children enjoy themselves in the indoor and outdoor playgrounds, you can relax with a well-deserved coffee or hot chocolate.

Domein de putten is open at weekends, during school holidays and on public holidays.

The Disadvantages of Winter Camping

Of course, winter camping also comes with a few disadvantages. Fortunately, we think the advantages more than make up for them!

Fewer Cafés and Restaurants Are Open
There are fewer tourists during the winter months, which means some cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area may be closed. It's therefore a good idea to check opening times before heading out for a meal or a drink. Discover more than 17 places to eat and drink near our campsite >>

Cold Temperatures
Winter camping means dealing with the cold, and that's something you need to be prepared for. Fortunately, warm clothing and the right equipment can make a big difference. With a few extra layers and a cosy fleece blanket, the cold soon becomes much easier to manage!
